Chinstrap Penguins
Chinstraps prefer ice-free slopes and often share nesting grounds with Adelie or Gentoo penguins. Studies by the British Antarctic Survey in the South Orkeny Islands find that in years which are relatively ice free, the Chinstrap penguins do well, forcing Adelie penguins to swim further out to see for food. In years of more sea ice, the stoutly little Adelie penguins are more successful at hiking across the sea ice to food. Nature keeping it all in check!

As the chicks grow large enough to defend themselves against the ever circling Skua's, they group together in creche's while their parents go out to sea for more food.

Both the parents and chicks seem to spend plenty of time exercising their vocal chords.

This head on shot of a Chinstrap penguin strolling by shows the distinctive thin band of black feathers under their beaks.
