| The Magellanic Penguins can only be found in the
Sub-Antarctic Islands. We encountered them on East Falkland Island,
near Stanley. They stand about 50-70cm tall and remind one vaguely
of panda's with the black and white ring around their eyes. If chanced
upon, they seemed to be very shy and frequently freeze. |

Playing possum
Gypsy Cove, East Falkland Island
The Magellanic Penguins frequent the Falkland Islands and live
on the plentiful supply of squid in the surrounding waters. They
breed during September and disperse around March and April.

Guarding burrow
Carcass Island
Magellanic penguins don't nest on rocks like other penguins, preferring
to raise their young in shallow burrows. Because of this, magellanic
penguins are strictly sub-polar (no earth to burrow into below the
Antarctic covergence!)

Tip-toeing away...
Carcass Island
Magellanic penguins are notoriously shy and as I crept closer,
they kept an equal distance of about 100m from me...
