Rockhopper Penguins
Rockhopper penguins are the third smallest penguin, but they make up for it with their fesity attitudes, thinking nothing of picking a fight with another penguin coming too close! They prefer rocky cliffs as areas to nest and have been known to spurn vast empty stretches of sandy beaches (certainly, at Saunders Island in the Falklands, they ignored a nearly barron beach near their cliff...)

With vivid red eyes and menacing yellow 'eyebrows,' the Rockhoppers can look pretty intimidating!

Rockhoppers playing in a pool

Squabbling in a tidal pool

In this tidal pool near their nesting area, numerous Rockhoppers were cleaning and playing amongst themselves in shallow rock pools

Nesting Rockhoppers and Blue eyed shags

Sharing the nest
Saunders Island, Falkland Islands

The rocky cliffs of Saunders Island were precious nesting ground, and here the Rockhoppers were sharing their turf with nesting Blue Eyed Shags

Rockhoppers hopping up a path

Hopping along the trail

Grass either side, but the sturdy Rockhoppers all hopped up and down this little rocky trial to get to higher nesting ground.
