| When the sun penetrates the clouds
(or better yet, the clouds are blown away), the snow and crystal clear
skies reveal a wide range of pastel colours as the sun sets low on
the horizon |

Sunset peaks
Antarctic Peninsula near Lemaire Channel
Frequently, the low angle of the sun means a lot of the mountain
is in shadow when the sun sets, and only the tops will glow pastel
shades of pink and orange.

Alpine glow
Weincke Island
The sun sets late in the northern reaches of the Antarctic Peninsula
in summer. This photo was captured just before midnight when most
had retired after spectacular day cruising from Neko Harbour down
through the Lemaire Channel under a deep blue canopy. They missed
an even more spectacular and rare sunset with pink-blues to the
north and vibrant golds and oranges to the south (see next image)

Golden horizon
Southern end of Lemaire Channel
In the picture above, it was beautiful pastels, but to the south,
it was stunning gold and oranges which backlit the icebergs drifting
in our wake

Fiery peak
Anvers Island from Paradise Bay
Although clouds filled the horizon, the fiery peak of Mt Moberly
on Anvers Islands was briefly revealed as we left Paradise Bay.

Icebergs at sunset
Antarctic Sound
Unable to sleep, I looked out the window in the wee hours of the
morning to see a lingering sunset giving the sky a ghostly pink
and orange glow. A few icebergs were drifting near the ship as we
sailed eastwards to the Weddell Sea.
