HELEN FIELDING
I have placed "sizzler
ratings" next to books read, even if the review
hasn't been added at this time.

BRIDGET
JONES: THE EDGE OF REASON (1999) |
Sub-category:
Generation X
The plot: Bridget Jones
has finally got her man and should be settling down to a life
of, well, not a 'smug married' but at least, happy to be part
of a couple at last. However, before long, one of her distant
'friends,' Rebecca, has her eyes on Mark Darcy. Between alcohol,
her well-meaning friends and a library of self-help books,
Bridget manages to let Mark slip away, and thus begins a year
of hell...
Comment: This book was,
I felt, better than the original... Not as filled with witty
observations of life as a single 30-something career woman
as the original, but fun nonetheless - especially as Bridget
spirals into a hell of her own making... No, not being sadistic
- but the way it happens DOES happen to lots of people! The
thread with Mark Darcy throughout the book gets a bit disjointed
in places but actually kept me turning pages up until the
end of the book, more so than the original book did. The only
thing I failed to understand was the manner of narration -
it it was meant to be a journal, it fell flat as it felt more
like Bridget was dictating into a cassette player... But,
an enjoyable read - especially for all the single women out
there!

BRIDGET
JONES'S DIARY (1996) |
Sub-category:
Generation X
The plot: Bridget Jones
is a bright 30-something Singleton who is trying to survive
in a viscous world surrounded by Smug Marrieds, commitment-phobic
guys, calories, cigarettes, alcohol and lottery tickets. She
starts the year off with a series of New Years Resolutions,
and struggles through the year to attain these goals and learns
some stuff on the way.
Comment: Probably the "30-something"
book that started it all. As such, it works out to be much
better than the other offerings as well. Although I wouldn't
say it's a laugh a minute, there are passages that'll make
you smirk and other areas which will make you groan in embarrassment
as you realise, "that's happened to me..." That said, no matter
what the critics say, I think it's only the "Literary Guy"
who may like this book.
