NICCI FRENCH

I have placed "sizzler ratings" next to books read, even if the review hasn't been added at this time.

The Memory Game The Safe House
Killing me softly: A novel of Obsession

THE SAFE HOUSE (1998)

Sub-category: mystery/suspense
The plot: In the quiet east-english town of Stamford, a viscious double murder occurs where only the child barely survives. Dr. Samantha Laschen, a London doctor who had just relocated to Stamford, is bullied into looking after Fiona Mackenzie, the survivor. After a few doubts, Fiona quickly integrates into Samantha's life - until things begin to go horribly wrong.
Comment: A seemingly innocent narration that strips away your trust layer by layer until the cesspool of evil is revealed. My only quibble with it would be the way English author's of recent years seem to feel very content leaving their victim with a loose end or two to worry them - but not resolve.

THE MEMORY GAME (1997)

Sub-category: mystery
The plot: Jane Martello, struggling architect and ex-wife of one of the Martello dynastic family's sons, is at a huge family gathering where they plan to implement her design on an extension to the Martello retreat. However, as the builders break ground for the foundations, some bones are unearthed - human bones. Instantly, the Martello family realises these are the remains of Natalie - believed murdered 25 years before. Jane, feeling estranged and emotionally torn because of the proof of the murder of her best friend and the seperation from her husband, seeks therapy. It is here, as she pulls together her life, some nagging issues about the mystery surounding Natalie's death come to surface...
Comment: About the only redeeming feature to this novel is the ending. Other than that, this is a rather bland murder/mystery novel with a lead character with few redeeming features (except for her new lover-to-be). 'Twould be far better to start a venture into a novel by Cornwell, Reich or Walters if you can!

An absolute sizzler of a movie - A must see!
A scorcher of a good movie; still capable of riveting you to your seat
Low flame burner; a pleasant piece of mindless brain candy
A fizzler of a movie which will have you counting zzzzzz's...
