Sub-category: mystery/murder
The plot: In a quiet
London night, an elderly woman is run over by a car, not
once, but three times. Then her body was shoved under a
parked car. She has the address of the person who discovers
her body in her wallet, but he is just returning from a
tryst. Into this bewildering murder, Thomas Lynley is dragged
away from a party to investigate. Its a delicate matter
- people high up in the police have a connection with the
victim, and Lynley must walk a fine line between providing
all evidence pertinent to the investigation and finding
the murderer.
Comment: The one thing
that keeps you turning the pages in this novel is the "Why?"
Why was this lady killed and what on earth do all the other
characters have to do with this seemingly innocent lady?
Although George has written bit of a tome here, I was kept
up late for several consecutive nights, burning the midnight
oil, wandering if the reason for her death - or the murderer
- would ever be discovered. A subtle page-turning tale of
suspense!
