OF FORTUNE (1999) |
Sub-category: Historic/Romance
The plot:
Eliza is an orphan adopted by a well-to-do British Shipping
Agent and his sister in Chile in the 1800's. Eliza grows up
learning about life from her sophisticated and doting adopted
Mother, Rose Sommers, and a Chilean cook and housekeeper,
Mama Fresia. Extremely talented and somewhat undisciplined,
Eliza lives a life of bliss, learning the best of both cultures.
At 16, Miss Rose starts planning her future, which coincides
with Eliza falling deeply in love with a poor Chilean idealist.
When Eliza learns that Miss Rose has no room for Eliza settling
with someone less than her level of social status, Eliza follows
her sweetheart to the wilds of the California gold rush.
Comment:
A wonderful story filled with marvelous multifaceted
characters! It was a pleasure to sink into a warm folds of
a story filled with all sorts of twists and tricks emotions
play on the human psyche and heart. The reader is swept up
on a marvelous tale which not only details the impulses of
Eliza and the character-defining events of those around her,
also imparts a wonderful (if possibly, slightly rosy) picture
of the giddy days during the Californian gold rush in the
1800's. A really good read!
