The plot: As the 19th Century
became the 20th Century, mankind felt he had conquered all
the Physic wonders out there. As the 20th Century became the
21st, one company had developed a technique using ideas not
even comprehended at the end of the 19th Century to allow
man to return investigate his past. However, it is still in
its trial phase and a Progessor has mistakenly travelled back
in time who should not have gone. It comes down to his student's
to try and return him to the 21st Century.
Comment: I'd love to say
this is typical Crichton schmuck, but I am still in awe of
how someone who started his adult life as a Doctor has written
such incredibly detailed novels on such a diverse range of
subjects so far from his own primordial education Thus, as
per usual, I was blown away by this book. Crichton's attention
to the latest details in both modern physics and new revelations
about the Dark Ages combined with his easy-reading style has
produced yet another sensational, page-turning novel. Enjoyed
it from cover to cover.

EATERS
OF THE DEAD (1976) |
Sub-category:
History
The plot: In 922 A.D., A
bunch of Viking Warriors are recalled from the Mediterranean
to help their king fight a nameless terror. The refined arab,
Ahmad Ibn Fadlan is coerced into going as the necessary 'thirteenth
man who is not a northman.' In this way, Ahmad inadvertently
becomes an impartial witness to the heroic fights of Beowulf,
one of history's true hero's.
Comment: Once again, Crichton
has written an astounding novel with incredible attention
paid to facts and details that remain as close to the truth
as possible. In his author's note, Crichton mentions he write
this novel as part of a dare to make Beowulf from a boring
poem into a vibrant story people would want to read. Crichton
succeeds in this fictional retelling of Beowulf.
