The plot: Artemis Fowl
is a twelve-year-old criminal mastermind. With an agenda
to firstly obtain fairy gold, and secondly, to retrieve
his family honor, he sets about purchsing the Book, a
guide to all that makes up Fairy lore and magic. Once
he has obtained it, he sets about using the latest technology
to help him decode it, and then push into motion his master
plan - kidnap a fairy and hold it ransom for Fairy Gold!
However, things start to go awry when the faries don't
quite play by the Book...
Comment: After decades
of silence, the British contribution to children's fantasy
has certainly reared up again! In this book, Colfer blends
ancient fairy lore with state-of-the-art technology to
create a story that boils down to wit and action. Unlike
that other popular children's series
at this time, Colfer tells a tale which believably blends
today's modern technology with fantasy without intruding
on the central fable elements of the story. To that end,
this may make the book less enjoyable for those who would
rather not learn that faries use technology to create
half their magic. However, the book is an enjoyable read
and extremely well thought out. The ending alludes to
more Fowl books, and with the current rise in popularity
of said books, I would imagine there will be other Fowl
books reviews on this page in the future...
