The plot: A man meets
a woman. The next night, she is gone. He goes to her place
and is nearly killed in a covert raid on her place. Convinced
that the woman is the one who can give him a life, he
sets off to find her. However, he rapidly finds out she
has no past, having systematically erased it behind her.
Undetterred, he tries to find her - and a maverick governement
agency now wants to find him as well as her. However,
he has secrets of his own which frustrate the government
trying to follow them both...
Comment: Well! Not
quite your usual Koontz horror piece at all! Actually,
an extremely well-written thriller. The reason why comes
out at the very end in Koontz's Afterword - this is more
of a political work designed to highlight some devastating
and crippling laws the that have been implemented in America
(to give away more, would be to give away the plot...).
Although
the pace is not fast, this book enthralls the reader and
keeps them turning pages as we try to work out the 'who,
what, why, how' of it all - as in 'WHO is this woman,
WHAT has she done to be persued to aggressively, WHY is
this man so attracted to her and HOW are they going to
escape the government agency?" I actually don't even
want to know what time I was able to put the book down
each night for 3 nights, because I was very tired by the
end of it owing to the lack of sleep I got while reading
it... So, if you have some spare time and want to read
a good old fashioned thriller, this suprising 'little'
Koontz gem is highly recommended.
