Science Fiction

PETER F. HAMILTON

I have placed "sizzler ratings" next to books read, even if the review hasn't been added at this time.

Greg Mandel Novels: Others:
Mindstar Rising A second chance at Eden
A Quantum Murder
The Nano Flower
The Night's Dawn Trilogy:
The Reality Dysfunction
The Neutronium Alchemist
The Naked God

THE NAKED GOD (1999)
Sub-category: Hard core SF/bio-technology
The plot: The final novel in the Reality Dysfunction trilogy picks up right where the last novel left with young Jay 'kidnapped' by a friendly alien to another world and the whole of the Confederation disintegrating but prepared to fight hard as the possessed attempt to increase their strangle hold on the human body.
Comment: Its always sad when such a fine series of books comes to an end, and a recent small conversation with Mr. Hamilton as he signed books would suggest he is going to take a holiday from this series. But right from the start of this huge trilogy, Hamilton has kept the reader turning pages as he introduces one plot twist after another. True to form, in this final book in the series, he seemlessly blends the story lines as humans struggle to find solution of ridding themselves of the possessed without destroying their humanity in the process. Hamilton keeps you guessing right up to almost the end with a string of red-herrings because the solution is more audacious and bold and unexpected.

A SECOND CHANCE AT EDEN (1998)
Sub-category: Hard core S/bio-technology
The plot: A collection of published and unpublished short stories forming the prequel to Hamilton's Night's Dawn trilogy.
Comment: Some of the stories showcase Hamilton's wonderful SF talent, and some of them leave you wondering why on Earth was that story included at all....

THE REALITY DYSFUNCTION (1997)
Sub-category: Hard core SF/bio-technology
The plot: The human race is approaching the 26th century and technology has advanced to mankind colonising other planets and nanotechnology has resulted in (almost) two different 'species' of man living side by side and working together. However, on a remote planet being colonised by misfits and criminals, something happens that threatens the entire survival of the human race.
Comment: The best piece of advice I received on reading this terribly thick book was: Persevere through the first 100 pages. Excellent advice. A the end of 100 pages, the basis for the novel has been set and you feel the hook sink in. By the end of 200 pages, there is absolutely no question of stopping until the book is finished, and then there are the sequels... If you love Science Fiction, then do not be out off by the thick novel; this is one of the best SF novels of the '90's.

An absolute sizzler of a movie - A must see!
A scorcher of a good movie; still capable of riveting you to your seat
Low flame burner; a pleasant piece of mindless brain candy
A fizzler of a movie which will have you counting zzzzzz's...
