THE
SKY ROAD (2000) |
Sub-category: Distant Earth
Future
The plot: The Human Race
has suffered a Third World War and many episodes of unrest
and civil warfare. Finally, the time has come to venture back
into space. However, as the new spaceship is built to take
humans back into space, a group of technologists, called the
'tinkers,' is looking to the past to find out if it is even
safe to go back into space. One young Glaswegian historian,
Clovid colha Gree, may be the key to finding out if it is
safe to go back into space. His research reveals that the
same person who delivered the Earfth from its unrest may also
hold a dark secret that will prevent the human race reaching
for the sky road...
Comment: The Sky Road is
a well written story, it moves along at a fair pace and yet,
it somehow failed to grab me. I can't quite put my finger
on why, which makes it difficult to argue whether or not you
may like to read this book... It could be the simple plot
line, it could be we are missing what happened in the past
- until the end - which means you don't know why the human
race is in the position they are in, or it could be just the
story doesn't reach out and compell you to turn pages... Or
it could just be a combination of these and other factors.
Maybe this isn't the best book to gain an introduction to
Ken MacLeod!
