OCEANSPACE
(2000) |
Sub-category: Near Earth
future
The plot: On a routine
mission to retrieve manganses nodules from a deep ocean
mining truck, Joe Niedzweicki has a mysterious encounter
with a sea beast off the coast of Florida. Barely escaping
with his life, his employers are alerted and marine scientist,
Judith Lispcomb is keen to get down to ocean station, Tethys
and try and see the sea serpent.
Comment: It is very easy
to compare Oceanspace with Arthur C. Clark, "The Deep
Range," this could be a little fatal for reading the
novel. The novel opens very promisingly, and the narration
throughout obviously reveals Steele's deep research on the
subject, which should have made the story very interesting.
However, Steele ruined the story brewing by dropping in
a bunch of terribly cliched characters - or if the characters
have some substance, then the situations they find themselves
are cliched. That said, the story was a pleasant read.
