DOOMSDAY BOOK (1992)
Sub-category: Time travel
The plot: It's Christmas time in Oxford and young Kivrin has persuaded departmental head to send her back to witness Christmas just outside of Oxford in the early 1300's. After extensive research and preparation, Kivrin steps through the portal and arrives in the Middle Ages. Disaster ensues as Kivrin is overcome by a fever after her arrival - and an epidemic sweeps through modern Oxford. It becomes a battle against time as Dunworthy, the departmental head, battles to re-open the portal amongst chaos in Oxford - and Kivrin begins to realise that she is not in the early 1300's at all...
Comment: Although a little slow to start, this book will still have you burning the midnight oil as each chapter is skillfully finished on a cliffhanger. And when the cliffhanger chapter endings stop, you are in to deep and have to keep turning pages to see what happens anyway. A masterful novel of suspense written by this Nebula and Hugo award winning writer.
