MICHAEL CORDY

I have placed "sizzler ratings" next to books read, even if the review hasn't been added at this time.

The Miracle Strain
Crime Zero

CRIME ZERO (1999)

Sub-category: Bio-genetics
The plot: Luke Decker is a criminal psychologist who is growing increasingly cynical about how his field of expertise is being corrupted by scientists who believe crime is the result of genes not a combination of environmental factors as well as genetics. As he is about to terminate his position with the FBI, he is suddenly thrust into a catastrophic situation engineered to bring about a complete change in the path of human evolution. He must team up with an old love and pioneer in the new wave of genetics to stop the atrocious act from happening.
Comment: Not quite as good as the original this is nonetheless a compelling novel about what can happen when the advances in science fall into the hands of those with alternate agenda's to the natural evolution of Homo Sapien. Overall, I would say this book is a little slower than Cordy's original, The Miracle Strain, but still has you up late at night burning the midnight oil. Maybe for me it was ruined slightly by reading Darwin's Radio (Greg Bear) immediately before - not aware that both were on the genetics theme - so if you are planning on reading both, read this one first!

THE MIRACLE STRAIN (1997)

Sub-category: Medical/drama
The plot: At the crowning moment of his career, Dr. Tom Carter's world is shattered as his wife is assassinated and his daughter is diagnosed with a terminal condition. Dr. Carter's life is thrown into deeper and deeper chaos as he desperately seeks a cure for his daughter. What happens goes beyond the barriers of medicine and into the realms of religion as he races against time and other people's motives.
Comment: Since I accidentally picked this book up thinking it was a Michael Crichton novel I had missed, this turned out to be a pleasant surprise. The Miracle Strain is a very well written debut novel with many twists and turns as the various storylines weave together and entwine with the reader. The plot is also fascinating and intriguing and focuses on a 'what if' of genetics (more I dare not say for fear of exposing the story!).
