MATTHEW REILLY
I have placed "sizzler
ratings" next to books read, even if the review
hasn't been added at this time.

The
Ice Station (1998) |
Sub-category: Action
Adventure
The plot:
Just before an intense solar flare destroys radio communication
between Antartica and the world, a distress call from an American
base slips though - asking for help as several men go missing
upon discovery of a metal object buried in 100 million year
old ice... The United States Marines, led by the enigmatic
Lieutenant Shane Schofield head to secure the ice station
until the American's can come and properly unearth the object.
However, the US Marines weren't the only one who heard that
message and Schofield finds himself defending the station
from more than one foe...
Comment:
As depressingly young as Matthew Reilly is, he set out to
write stories with non-stop action and has more than succeeded!
The Ice Station is an extremely well though out, well researched
bit of action which to my count, let me come up for air on
only three occasions. The only flaw in this nonstop thriller
was Reilly constant use of italics to emphasise
every key word or phrase that we might overlook
in our hasty reading as the pace carries us along...
