Lara
Croft: Tomb Raider (2001) |
Starring:
Angelina Jolie, Job Voight, Noah Taylor
The plot:
Lara Croft is dragged into the evil conspiracy of the Illuminate
as the alignment of all 9 planets draws near. As this is
an event that only occurs once in every 5000 years, for
the Illuminate to control the world, they need to have all
the pieces before the planets all line up. Lara stumbles
into this when a message arrives from her deceased father
alerting her to other powers at play.
Comment:
Okay.... Lara Croft has some novel workout regime's,
but that and her ability to wear a t-shirt in anything from
sub-zero temperatures to tropical heat didn't necessarily
make for a great plot. However, if you concentrate, you
will find some threads throughout, and if you expect the
absolute worse, you may even be pleasantly suprised by a
movie which appears to be targeted directly at the hormone
overload of young teenage boy fantasies...

The
TAILOR OF PANAMA (2001) |
Starring:
Pierce Brosnan, Geoffrey Rush, Jamie Lee Curtis
The plot:
Disgraced MI6 agent, Osnard is reassigned to Panama as
a last ditch attempt prevent him tampering with more high
profile wives. However, Osnard quickly find himself quite
at home amongst the 85 laundrettes (banks) and the cocaine
towers. Going though the list of listed British citizens,
he finds a tailor who just doesn't quite have the background
to justify his profession. Osnard immediately moves in
and offers to provide Harry Pendel, with money if he can
provide him with information about potential espionage
developments in Panama. Needing the money, Pendel provides
him with a story that suits both their needs - until MI6
take it seriously.
Comment:
Well, if you are going to be forever typecast forever
as a suave British gent, you may as well show all aspects
of British smoothness and Brosnan positively shines in
his role as the 'anti-James Bond.' Geoffrey Rush is equally
likeable as the understated British tailor trying to keep
a low profile away from those who may have any connection
with his past. Both the actors excel in the slightly quirky
script and the film was enjoyable from start to finish.
I haven't read Jean Le Carre's book, which the film was
based on, but if its like his other novels, then relaly,
credit has to be given to the screenwriters for making
it so enjoyable without getting bogged down in the weight
of a Le Carre novel.
