TECHNOLOGY

I have placed "sizzler ratings" next to movies to give you an idea of how good they are

Enemy of the State
Mission Impossible 2
Swordfish

MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 2 (2000)

Starring:Tom, Cruise, Anthony Hopkins, Thandie Newton,
The plot: Ethan Hunt of the Mission Impossible team is sent to Sydney to retrieve the mysterious 'Chimera' biological virus, created by his friend, Vladmihr from the dastardly villain, Ambrose. Along the way, he gets distracted by his new recruit, Miss Hall, and lots of violence.
Comment: Me thinks John Woo cheated a bit in film length as just about any action scene in this movie was filmed in slow motion. Except for one dive 'n' roll by Tom Cruise which was rather like Tim Allen doing gratuitous rolls in Galaxy Quest (an opinion shared by anyone who has seen both films...). Because of the neverending slow motion, one expects The Matrix type effects, but alas, as unkillable as Hunt is, he is mortal and so you are left to fill in the missing stunts in your head. Why am I pontificating on missed opportunities within M:I-2? Because the plot was so slow (to match the slow motion sequences?) and rather so lacking in any thought-provoking twists and turns that I was left to either change down mental gears, or use my idle time watching Tom Cruise spend 5 minutes crossing a flame-filled door thinking of ways to improve this film... Nice music though.

ENEMY OF THE STATE (1999)

Starring: Will Smith, Gene Hackman
The plot: An easy-going lawyer has some incriminating evidence planted on him. Next thing he knows, he has lost his job, his family and his life as some mysterious government sect tracks his every move in a desperate attempt to get the evidence back.
Comment: If you feel you have even two synapses sizzling away in your brain, then you better hold off on watching this until you are brain dead. It's not that the film is necessaily bad, it's just that there are so many gaping big holes in the plot, it's hard going not to exclaim out loud how stupid that was... However, the film is tolerable and does it best to play on our fears of invasion of privacy and technology - or is it already reality? (Except for those ridiculous bits...)

SWORDFISH (2001)

Starring: Hugh Jackman, John Travolta, Halle Berry
The plot: Misguided vigalante, Gabriel Shear hires a ex-computer hacker, Stanley to crack to help him steal millions of dollars worth of funds from a lapsed government operation. Little does Stanley realise the danger he is getting himself into when Shear's partner, Ginger, comes dangling enough money to give Stanley back his life and daughter.
Comment: Okay folks, lets sit down and think of some really, really, really cool action scenes! And lets think of what ALWAYS annoys you when an action film is made. What's that? The bad guy always looses through dumb mistakes? Well lets fix that... Unfortunately, that seems to be as far as the makers of this film got! They opened up encouragingly (apart from an annoying unfocused camera), and proceeded rapidly downhill prefering firepower and shockpower to carry the film with no fear wasted on having something so mundane as a plot interfere with one explosive scene after another. However, if plot is not the highest on your priorities when viewing a film, then the nonstop action, funked up soundtrack, glimpses of Hugh Jackman's '6-pack' - and ever increasing amounts of flesh on Halle Berry should rather delight you!
