ACTION

I have placed "sizzler ratings" next to movies to give you an idea of how good they are

CHARLIE'S ANGELS (2000)

Starring: Cameron Diaz, Drew Barrymore, Lucy Liu, Bill Murray, Sam Rockwell
The plot:
Super-intelligent software inventor, Eric Knox, has been kidnapped. The Angels are ordered to retrieve him and his latest invention, a voice-identification program, which is believed to have been appropriated by an evil businessman (Tim Curry).
Comment:
The making of this film was plagued by rumours of budget overruns, no ending in sight, spats between the girls... Then came the movie short where one isn't to sure if the angels are trying to take themselves seriously or not... And then finally, right on schedule, the movie came out. Surprisingly, all the rewrites and production problems have resulted in a fun feature film with the angels all having fun while kicking every evil person's butt. Some truly eye-popping action scenes are mixed in with clever - and funny - dialogue all adding up to making this an really entertaining film!

HEARTBREAKERS (2001)
Starring: Sigourney Weaver, Jennifer Love-Hewitt, Gene Hackman, Ray Liotta
The plot:
Max and Page are a mother and daughter team who make money through, 'the scam': marry a man - and then catch him in an intimate act within days of their marriage. However, the IRS catches up with Max, and she has to plead with her eager-to-go-solo daughter to do one more high stakes gamble. So, off to Florida they head, where it comes down to choosing a smoking despot or a mummy's boy doctor...
Comment: Playful and full of laughs, this is a bit of light hearted entertainment. Sigourney Weaver displays her comedic talents (first seen in Ghostbusters, and recently in Galaxy Quest) to deliver a smooth performance as both a loving mother and someone with no base level on low to sink in a scam! Jennifer Love-Hewitt is fine, even if the emphasis with the camera seems to be more on her chest than on her acting. Gene Hackman is just plain revolting as the dieing smoking millionaire - got to love it! Heartbreakers has a nice light and funny script with plenty of laughs.

MISS CONGENIALITY (2001)

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Benjamin Bratt, Michael Caine, William Shatner, Candice Bergen
The plot:
Gracie Hart is an effective FBI agent, even if she is a complete tomboy and a clutz. However, when a threat is made to blow up the Miss USA pageant by a serial bomber, she ends up being the only agent who is available to take on the undercover position as 'Miss New Jersey.' So, against all principles, she is forced to enter into the feminine world of pageants and seek out the person behind the bombings. Thus begins Cinderella's rags to beauty story.
Comment: Ok, ths movie is a bit of light fluff, but it is fun, all the same! Sandra Bullock is back at her best playing the pretty but clutzy agent. Benjamin Bratt is as plastic as ever, but that's all right - he is great as a clean cut cop... Ach, its a bit of fun!

THE MUMMY RETURNS (2001)

Starring: Brenden Fraser, John Hannah, Rachel Weisz
The plot:
It's nearly 10 years on since Rick went into the desert to find his riches amongst lost treasures. Now, in the enlightened year of 1934, his wife , Evie and thier son are suddenly dragged back to the desert to once again, battle to save humanity from a dominating power from the past. This time though, it's a race to command the Scorpion king and his army. But while Rick and Evie do battle to make sure the Earth isn't beaten into submission by ancient powers, other foes are resurecting the Mummy as the only power capable of commanding the Scopion King's army...
Comment: Fast, fun and full of special effects, this sequel at least now creeps into the action/adventure category last habited by Indiana Jones. The plot is breezy but the excitment and action keep you engaged for the entire film - and its a fun ride, and all the favourites from the original film, The Mummy, are back to keep you company. Well worth the price of admission!
